Border battles Sandinist troops are battling guerrillas along Nicaragua’s northern and southern borders after a new round of rebel invasions. The Nicaraguan Defence Ministry said 11 guerrillas were killed in 24 hours of fighting in the northern province of Matagalpa, but made no mention of government casualties. — Managua. Minister quits Peter Stinson, aged 34, has resigned from the Fiji Cabinet as Minister for Energy and Minerals. Mr Stinson said that his company, Stinson Pearce, Ltd, was in difficulties caused by recession and as owner of 84 per cent of its shares he had to return to it to attend to its problems. — Suva. Blockade bid Women peace protesters have begun a five-day attempted blockade at the Greenham Common cruise missile base in Berkshire. Several dozen of them moved into position in a bid to seal the base off from the outside world. They sat in the entrance gates, hoping to stop traffic into and out of the base. — London. Rift healed After being at odds for over a decade, Libya and Morocco have affirmed their determination to put an end to their disputes and establish fraternal relations. After a three-day visit by the Libyan leader, Colonel Muammar Gadaffi, the two countries said that they agreed on “the need to set aside all causes of tension” in North Africa and, “to maintain the area outside international conflicts liable to favour hegemony and zones of influence.” — Rabat. Repatriation move More than 250,000 West Indians in Britain would support a Government scheme for voluntary repatriation, a West Indian welfare organisation has asserted. In a letter to the Home Secretary, Mr Leon Brittan, the West Indian Movement called for “positive action to assist those substantial numbers who are trapped in Britain.” — London.
