Fortress Fitt gutted
NZPA London Gerry Fitt, the Catholic opponent of the Irish Republican Army and former legislator for West Belfast, said yesterday that his Belfast home had been burned down by the I.R.A. Mr Fitt, who moved to London with his wife after he was defeated in the June 9 General Election, said that he was told of the attack by the Royal Ulster Constabulary. The couple’s five daughters were also away. His home was known as “Fortress Fitt” because of the security equipment installed.
“This is the final thing in a campaign of terror which has been waged against me and my family for this past 11 years,” Mr Fitt told a reporter.
