Gas torch used in safe break
Burglars used a gas torch to take $l5OO from a safe at Tench Bros premises at the corner of Manchester Street and Cambridge Terrace on Sunday night. The torch was used to cut a way into a strongroom. The safe was removed from the room and cut open with the torch. A police spokesman said the burglars were probably experienced and would have spent “some time” on the premises. Twenty-six burglaries were reported to the police overnight and “more cars than could be counted” were stolen. A lot of property was also taken from parked cars. “People are probably rushing to get out of the rain and cold and forgetting to lock their cars,” the spokesman said.
