Downer and Company, in joint venture with Fletcher Construction, this month completes its first overseas contract, the $US24M expansion of an airport, road construction, water supply and electrical improvements at Bekau in the Caroline Islands. Work on the contract started in early 1980, with completion due in December, 1983, six months ahead of schedule. The new airport runway is 2.2 km long and 46m wide. Its formation meant shifting 2.2 M cu m of earth, and placing 55,000 tonnes of asphalt.
