New S.I.S. head
Sir,—l agree with J. Lane (June 28), propaganda emanates from many sources: America’s Government, journals, news services, armed forces, diplomats. I pointed out (March 11) that “Giap comes clean” was typically dishonest propaganda; America funded France’s attempted reconquest of Vietnam till 1954; and breached the Geneva Accords from 1955. Untrue propaganda reiterated “Communist atrocities” until American, Korean and South Vietnamese atrocities were so horrendous we saw that the stove was calling the kettle black. The Vietcong respected strict rules (breaches punished by death) of probity, respect, service and no rape (the second such group in history). Cam Ranh Base was used to attack the North, until victory. America still threatens Communist countries with nuclear weapons throughout the Pacific. Vietnam invaded Kampuchea to stop Pol Pot’s atrocities and C.I.A. interferences. America paid no reparations and China invaded Vietnam. Boat people fled poverty and war. John Smith fears Communist subversion but America is the most dangerously subversive nation. — Yours, etc., SUSAN TAYLOR. June 28, 1983
