Air pollution
Sir,—ln reply to Patrick Neary (June 30) I thank him for his information. G. A. Van Kuppevelt (June 30) has now written against open fires. Can the sources of the statements made be verified? It is characteristic of some people to complain that their ill-health was caused by smog, caused by open fires caused by thoughtless people. Nonsense. There are hundreds of happy, healthy people in Christchurch — some glad to be away from the winds of Wellington or from the muggy atmosphere of Auckland. All critics of the open fire should give thought to oil-fired heating systems burning away night and day throughout the colder months. Are these pollution free, or is Christchurch heading for the same fate as Los Angeles with a pall of smog permanently in place? — Yours, etc., M. A. HOGAN. June 30, 1983.
Sir,—l suggest that the guidance of householders away from the use of fires for winter warmth could be more imaginative. In order to reduce our air pollution problem, it would seem to be desirable both to ensure that no element of subsidy exists (such as for haulage) ior coal, and that any subsidy for (electricity should be concentrated upon the household tariff in the four coldest winter
months. Indeed, if it were possible, the import of coal to Christchurch should be taxed to subsidise electricity used there in wintertime. Because air pollution here is so harmful, I believe that this guidance should be quite sharply financial. — Yours, etc.,
R. A. SMITHAM. July 2, 1983.
