U.K. elections
Sir,—L. J. Robinson (June 27) continues to push the pernicious idea of proportional representation. His main argument is the mystical notion that eighty-odd M.P.S who cannot agree or govern in a “multiparty government” would somehow represent “the absolute majority.” The example of Italy, which has had 43 governments in 38 years without any of them being able to govern, shows that in practice it can easily become an absolute absurdity. Social Credit should wake up to the fact that few intelligent people are willing to work for a party which has a plan (proportional representation) to throw power away if ever it wins it. It would do far better if it had confidence in its proposed reforms and worked steadily to win and keep power under our excellent “first-past-the-post” system. If it governed well, it might then win an “absolute majority” of votes.— Yours, etc., MARK D. SADLER. June 30, 1983.
