The economy

Sir,—Assuming all the airs and graces of infallible genius but accepting no personal responsibility for his unfulfilled promises of three consecutive elections, Mr Muldoon recently came up with the "suggestion” that 1984—yet another election year—may well bring that long-awaited economic upturn. Some months ago, Mr Muldoon stated that any improvement in New Zealand’s position depended on American initiation. But what happens if the American dollar weakens and “their” economy again slips? For someone with no control over, or responsibility for, our economic chaos, Mr Muldoon has been consistently loquacious with unfulfilled promises, pro-/ phecies and suggestions. We des- ’

perately need a Finance Minister who can actually “control” then “improve” our economy, not a filibustering echo of Wall Street whose sole capability is incessant borrowing. If the last eight years are indicative of our future under a continuing Muldoon Administration, surely the only “suggestion” worthy of serious consideration is Mr Muldoon’s “honourable” retirement.—Yours, etc., ARTHUR MAY. June 25, 1983.
