Proms on radio

A 8.8. C. recording of a 1977 London Proms concert by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic with conductor Sir Charles Groves and young American cellist Ralph Kirshbaum as soloist, will be played on the Concert Programme at 8 p.m. The works performed are: Arnold’s Overture, Beckus the Dandipratt; Delius’ In a Summer Garden; and Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E minor Op 85. Shakespeare A feature programme about the Alan Wilkie Shakespeare Company which toured New Zealand in the 19205, produced by the University of Otago Radio Unit and presented by Lisa Warrington, can be heard on the Concert programme at 9 p.m.

The main topic under discussion on the science programme this evening (Concert) is long-term memories. There is considerable disagreement over how many kinds of long-term memory we have, and although over the last few years the idea that there are three distinct systems has been gaining acceptance, a group at the Applied Psychology Unit in Cambridge University have now come up with evidence that two of these may be the same. One of the group, Dr Anthony Baddely, explains that the two systems in question are the one that stores and recalls facts and the one that stores and recalls experiences. Other topics in the programme: how tape worms survive in the intestines; why animals and humans evolved legs to propel themselves rather than wheels; and the first intergalactic shock wave ever detected.
