Ministry inspection programme queried

PA Wellington Government officials are investigating whether- the Ministry of Agriculture’s meat and fish inspection programme should be transferred to the industries which use it. Representatives from the Treasury, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the State Services Commission have been asked to decide whether part or all of the inspection programme could be undertaken by the industries serviced, said the Minister of State Services, Mr Thomson, yesterday.

The officials would “identify and quantify the inefficiencies” of the inspection service and recommend ways of improving it, he said. They would also determine the financial and staff savings which might be made if the programme was transferred to the relevant industries. Written submissions would be called for from interested parties, and the group would report to the Cabinet committee on expenditure by October, Mr Thomson said.
