General forecast: Strong westerlies in most areas, with showers or thunderstorms about and west of the ranges, and about Stewart Island. Fresh snow over the South Island ranges, to low levels in the south. A few showers may spread to the Canterbury foothills, and into Otago and Southland. Temperatures should be a few degrees lower than yesterday.. Canterbury: Cold and showery about the Alps, snow to 500 m, elsewhere mainly fine but some falls spreading to the eastern foothills at times; northwesterlies, strong in exposed inland places and freshening at times about the coast. Marlborough: Northwesterly winds, strong

about the outer Sounds, otherwise fresh; fine but for a few showers in the north and west. Nelson: Westerlies freshening; fine apart from showers about the western ranges, spreading elsewhere from time to time. Buller: Fresh westerlies, changeable and cold with frequent showers and isolated thunderstorms; some snow on the ranges.
