H.S.O.B. climbs table

High School Old Boys was the only team in the leading division to score highly in “The Press” Cup senior rugby competition on Saturday. Old Boys were awarded the full 12 out of 12 for sportsmanship and gained eight out of eight for constructiveness. Their opponent, Sydenham, gained the same marks, which would suggest that Rugby Park patrons were treated to club rugby at its best. Lincoln College, which has led the table almost from the outset, received its lowest mark of the season, 14, but is still comfortably clear. It was helped in this regard by its two closest rivals, Belfast and Burnside, faring no better. Belfast also had 14 and Burnside, 13. It was a red-letter day for

University B, with its win against Merivale-Papanui, and it gained the full eight points for performance, as also did another side which gave its best display of the season, Hornby. Old Boys has now moved into second place, nine points behind Lincoln College, and with just three rounds remaining there is little chance of Lincoln College’s being overhauled by any other side than Old Boys. If the Old Boys-Sydenham match was perfection, the contest between Christchurch and Burnside was something else. At one stage there were three players in the sin bin — Mark Treweek and John Mill, of Christchurch, and Gary Fuller, of Bumside. The only other player to be

sent to the sin bin was John Gibson, of Suburbs. Saturday’s points:— Sydenham, sportsmanship 12, constructiveness 8, total 20; High School Old Boys, 12, 8, 20; Hornby, 11, 8,19; University B, 10, 8, 18; Marist, 12, 6, 18; Shirley, 12, 6, 18; New Brighton, 11, 6, 17; Merivale-Papa-nui, 10, 6,16; Linwood, 11, 5,16; Suburbs, 8,7, 15; Albion, 10, 5, 15; Belfast, 8,6, 14; Lincoln College, 9,5, 14; University A, 8,5, 13; Burnside, 7,6, 13; Christchurch, 4,6, 10.
