Tests ‘reverse discrimination’

PA Wellington A complaint has been lodged with the Human Rights Commission in a the row over special preselection tests to attract women to the Fire Service. The Wellington Fire Brigade offered to hold the special tests because only one woman was among 60 people eligible to compete for eight places in the brigade’s August intake. The area’s chief fire commander, Mr Ron Mills, said he thought it would be better to have more than one woman in the brigade.

Although the fire-fighters’ union, the Fire Brigades’ Federation, has put a ban on the special preselection tests, which were to have been held at the week-end, the union has not laid the complaint. The union objects to the tests on the ground that they are' a form of reverse discrimination. The Human Rights Commission is not revealing the identity of the complainant. The commission was not allowed to reveal details of a complaint laid, said a commission spokesman.
