Greymouth-born singer for contest

NZPA Sydney Another New Zealand opera singer has been entered in the Marianne Mathy Scholarship semifinals in Sydney next week to replace an Aucklander, Mr Wayne Morris. The organisers of. Australia’s premier classical singing scholarship said yesterday that Mr Morris was unavailable and had been replaced by Greymouthborn Miss Phillipa Reade, aged 24. A spokeswoman for the organisers said they had heard a tape recording of Miss Reade’s performance

as second-runner-up in the Dame Sister Mary Leo Scholarship in Auckland, and were “very impressed.” Entrance into the semifinals of the Marianne Mathy Scholarship is the second prize in the Auckland competition, and once Mr Morris forfeited his entrance, Miss Reade was accepted to take his place. Miss Reade is a pupil of Dame Sister Mary Leo and is being helped in her preparations for the Australian event by the Auckland soprano, Lynn Cantion. She works as a real estate agent, is completing her music degree.
