her own home, and the allowing of a friend to be present at all interviews and the examination.
The complainant’s statement should be taken after the woman has been medically examined and had a chance to wash and change her clothes. The researchers want a sexual assault unit established to remove rape reporting from police stations, where facilities should, in any event, be improved. Only policewomen should deal with the victims and more training should be given for this, including some training in psychology. More women police surgeons should be employed, the report says. It recommends a requirement that the complainant’s consent to a medical examination be obtained and that she be given the choice of being examined by a police surgeon or a private practitioner.
