Shop theft admitted

A man convicted of stealing $3OO from a city shop told police, in explanation, that he needed the money “because he was sick and tired of living in a garage,” said Sergeant R. J. Hawke in the District Court yester-

day. Shaun Kevin McAllister, aged 22, had admitted steal-

mg the money, the property of Hereford Street Furnishers on June 8. Sergeant Hawke said that the defendant snatched the money from a cash drawer while an associate kept the shop assistant in conversa-

tion. Mr Allister was quickly apprehended outside and the

money was recovered. Sergeant Hawke said that the defendant was currently serving a sentence of eight months periodic detention.

Judge Frampton remanded the defendant on bail to June 24 for a probation report and sentence. Another man, Martin David Waugh, aged 23, unemployed, who faces the same charge, was remanded on bail to July 13 for a defended hearing.
