Smoke ‘exceeded limits’
Smoke readings in central Christchurch exceeded the World Health Organisation’s health safety limits throughout Queen’s Birthday weekend.
In the same period, readings in Manchester Street and the inner suburbs exceeded the limit on two days, and the outer suburbs on one day. The worst day was Monday, June 6, when smoke readings were high throughout Christchurch, including the outer suburbs.
The district air pollution control officer in the Health Department, Dr T. J. Brady, said that a lack of wind causing stable air masses above the city was the main reason for the excessive smoke readings. Although the skies were clear, this had produced cold, frosty nights when many Christchurch homes had coal fires burning. Queen’s Birthday weekend and one week-end in May have been the only week-ends with excessive smog readings in Christchurch so far this winter.
