Marsden men walk off job

PA Wellington A blast which injured four men on the $l5OO million Marsden Point oil refinery expansion job on Wednesday led to a walk-out by all 2000 construction workers yesterday. The Combined Union’s site committee chairman Mr Bill Boyle, told NZPA last evening that the men would stay out until they were given satisfactory safety assurances in writing by the construction consortium, JV2.

Mr Boyle said the walk-

out decision was made at a site meeting late yesterday afternoon.

The job’s 230 engineers also walked out yesterday when an engineer was dismissed by the company for smoking in the working area of the refinery. The engineers were due back at work on Monday, a company spokesman said last evening. Mr Boyle was not prepared to say when the work force including the engineers, was prepared to return over the safety issue.
