Charles Haid, perhaps better known as Andy Renko in the television series, “Hill Street Blues,” will arrive in New Zealand this week-end for Telethon ’B3. This year’s Telethon, to be held on June 25 and 26, is in aid of the New Zealand Family Trust. Christchurch people are still busy thinking of ways to raise money for this cause. This month the Adoption Support Group's $2 registration fee for adoptees, birth parents, and adoptive parents will be given to Telethon. Christine Burden is sponsored for her attempt to break the New Zealand women’s pole-squatting record. The existing record is 77 hours, but Ms Burden hopes to stay at the top of a pole at the Bush Inn car-park for 80 hours from Thursday, June 23. Weather permitting, the Oki-nawa-te Karate Club will give karate demonstrations at the New Brighton Mall on Saturday from 12 noon to 1 p.m. All donations will be given to Telethon. The Canterbury Jet Boat Assocation offers jet boat rides on the Waimakariri River on Sunday, June 26. The boat will be launched from the ramp by the motorway bridge, but access is by the old State highway One bridge. Adults $5, children $3. A hospital bed-making competition will be sponsored at the Hornby Mall from June 22 to July 5. Prizes will be awarded for the best and fastest bed maker. Michael Pinkerton, aged 18, an epilepsy sufferer, will ride his bicycle from his home town of Ashburton to Christchurch on June 23. He is sponsored for each kilometre he travels. Members of the Colombo Street Baptist Church women’s group wifi hold an “anything” stall on the lawn in front of the church at the Beckenham shopping area from 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 25. A card-playing evening will be held at the Sheffield Community Centre at 8 p.m. on Friday, June 24. Proceeds from this evening will be given to Telethon. Members of the Ministry of Transport’s precision riding display teams will visit all schools in the Christchurch metropolitan area from Monday. Children will be able to watch the displays, ’ speak to the riders, and buy photographs of the team. Thomas Gibbs and six friends from the Christchurch Sheltered Workshops are taking part in a sponsored bikeathon during Telethon week-end.

After pushing a wheelbarrow under water for 4.Bkm between Tikao Bay and Akaroa from 10 a.m. on June 25, members of the Akaroa Divers’ Club will collect donations for Telethon it it. Members of the St Giles Indoor Bowls Club will charge a special price for their bowling evening on Wednesday and this money will be given to Telethon.

When entering the Merivale Mall competition for a Tasmanian holiday for two worth $2OOO, customers are encouraged to make a donation to Telethon. The competition will be run from Monday to Saturday, June 25, when the winner will be announced at the mall at 12.15 p.m. On Tuesday Hororata schoolchildren will compete in a festival of one-act plays and top team competitions. A number of stalls and activities will also be held. All the proceeds will be given to Telethon. Members of the Leeston Scout Troop will sell items they have made at the Leeston shopping area next Friday.
