Donizetti shaping up for fresh campaign
By
J. J. BOYLE
Donizetti, one of the South Island’s most promising two-year-olds last spring, might start a fresh campaign at the Waimate Hunt Club’s meeting next month.
Before he was put aside after showing signs of shin soreness, Donizetti won two races and was third at his only other start for Mr Cyril Smith.
Donizetti’s Riccarton trainer, John Bourne, will settle for a start at Waimate only if the footing is reasonably firm.
The attractive son of Bellissimo showed something of
his sharp speed on the No. 1 grass at Riccarton yesterday. He closed a gap of about two lengths to Shurduz while sprinting 600, in 36.85. Another interesting youngster bought out of the 1982 Trentham catalogue, but as yet unraced, also galloped promisingly yesterday. A grey filly by Sound Reason out of a sister to Baghdad Note bought for $27,500 at Trentham by Mr Richard Johnson will race from Helen Preston’s stable as Sound Note. Yesterday Sound Note was paired with a My
Friend Paul gelding from Dave Kerr’s stable to run 800 m in 50.45, the last 600 m in 365. Rattle The Sabre, a two-year-old engaged at Oamaru, was paired with his stablemate, The Kind, for 800 m, run in 495. Pronto Key and Native Light followed in 49.65. Channel Bay and Able Tim ran 600 m easily in 42.25.
Able Tim is a half-brother by Palatable to Double Jay, winner of eight races, and now in retirement. Double Jay is booked to Palatable next season.
