Five die in hotel fire
NZPA Fort Worth A pre-dawn fire which started in a roll of carpeting raced through a wing of a two storey Ramada Inn yesterday, killing five people and injuring 31. The authorities said that a fire alarm had failed to sound because of corroded batteries and the area that burned had no smoke alarms. Many guests were awakened by the sound of break-
ing glass or car horns honked as warnings by passers-by or hotel personnel. Some smashed windows with chairs and jumped from their second-floor rooms. The district fire chief, Jim Noah, said that the fire, which broke out at 3.20 a.m. at the Ramada Inn Central, apparently had started in a roll of carpeting. The cause had not been determined.
