First storage tank moved
The first of 10 giant storage tanks for the new liquefied petroleum gas depot at Woolston was taken through the Lyttelton road tunnel yesterday. The tunnel was closed for almost an hour, from about 5 a.m. to 6 a.m. yesterday, to allow a truck carrying the 47-tonne tank to go through. The transfer of the tank took longer than ex-
pected, said the trucking contractor, Mr Bob Lovell, of Wellington. “The delays were just because it was the first one and we had to make sure everything was right,” he said. “Because of the size and height of the tanks there is not very much room left in the tunnel.” There had been no real problems with the transfer
of the tank, Mr Lovell said. The second tank was due to go through the tunnel at 4 a.m. today. Mr Lovell said other tanks would be moved when there would be the least disruption to traffic. There was a possibility they could be moved at night rather than in the morning, he said.
