Public servants urged to help
Senior public servants had been told to “bend over backwards” to supply information to the public when the Official Informa-, tion Act came into force on July 1, said the assistant director of the information unit of the State Services Commission, Mr lan Miller, in Christchurch yesterday.
Mr Miller told a seminar for trade union officials that they should not take “no” for an answer when asking for information. If they felt they were being frustrated by - departmental officers they should refer them to the act’s preamble, which clearly set out the intent of the act.
Earlier yesterday, Mr Miller addressed about 140 senior officers of Government departments about their responsibilities under the act and how best they could implement it.
The assistant commissioner of the State Services Commission in Christchurch, Mr E. Delaney, said that the session was “very positive.” More workshops on the act would probably be held in the next few months, he said.
