Statement not by Mr Birch
A report in “The Press” yesterday said that the electricity committee of the Kaiapoi Borough Council was upset about the timing of a statement by the Minister of Energy, Mr Birch. This report was incorrect. The statement referred to by the committee was made by the president of the Electrical Supply Authorities! Association, Mr Innes Kerr-Taylor. Mr Kerr-Taylor said on May 25 that the Government might increase bulk electricity charges 25 to 30 per cent at the end of the wage-price freeze. Mr Birch replied that the Government was making “every effort” to work within the spirit of the price freeze. He said that although he could not guarantee that there would not be some adjustment to the bulk tariff, the Government was trying to reduce inflation permanently. He described Mr Kerr-Taylor’s remarks as “alarmist.” Kaiapoi’s electricity committee expressed disappointment that Mr KerrTaylor had made the statement at the beginning of winter, when electrical supply authorities were trying to promote electricity.
