Ministry role defended
Parliamentary reporter The Ministry of Agriculture has defended its role in the meat industry after being criticised by the member of Parliament for Rangiora, Mr D. F. Quigley. Mr Quigley said the Ministry had too much responsibility for hygiene and quality control, and more of this should be left to the private sector.
The Acting Director-Gen-eral of Agriculture, Mr M.
D. Gould, said yesterday that the Ministry’s role was required by New Zealand’s customers.
The desirability of transferring the Ministry’s Meat Division current responsibility for quality control to the meat industry itself was debatable, said Mr Gould.
Big meat markets in the United States and the European Community required the Ministry to have that
responsibility. “If we were not to meet these demands, we would not be able to export meat to those countries,” he said. “The Ministry has been negotiating on the technical front where the demands are considered to be unreasonable. The Minister of Agriculture has also raised these concerns during his visits overseas.” MR QUIGLEY, page 18
