Rower lands
NZPA Brisbane The lone trans-Pacific rower, Peter Bird, aged 36, has landed on Australian soil. Mr Bird, a London photographer, stepped off the patrol boat H.M.A.S. Bendigo and on to a Navy wharf at Cairns to a hero’s welcome late yesterday afternoon. He said he was philosophical about his “last gasp” failure to complete his 14,500 km row across the Pacific.
Mr Bird was only 33 nautical miles short of his target after a tortuous 10month voyage from California in his 10.6 m rowboat.
