Ski-racers promoted

Two of New Zealand's most talented young skiracers, Simon Wi Rutene (Rotorua) and Mattias Hubrich (Wellington), have been promoted to the national A team for the 1983 season. Both Wi Rutene and Hubrich, the younger brother of the national champion, Marcus Hubrich, performed well on the international ski-ing circuit in Europe over the recent northern winter. The Subaru New Zealand ski teams are:— A team — Women: Christine Grant (Queenstown), Kate Rattray (Canterbury). Men: Bruce Grant (Queenstown), Mattias Hubrich (Wellington), Marcus Hubrich (Wellington), Simon Wi Rutene (Rotorua). B team.— Women: Mandy Vryenhoek (Canterbury). Men: Maurice Brown (Queenstown), Rolf Cook (Ruapehu), Mark Fulton (Nelson), Graeme Goodwin (Canterbury), Richard Harrison (Canterbury), Chris Mosaed (Raetihi), Euan Paterson (Gore), Darrell Ransfield (Canterbury), Robert Scelly (Ruapehu).

The New Zealand Ski Association has also an-

nounced that the national team co-ordinator will be Mr Adrian Farnsworth (Auckland), with the men’s coach, Mr Russell Thomson (Auckland), and the women’s coach, Mr Bob Cowan (Christchurch), a Canadian.

Mr Thomson, coach of the Canterbury ski team last winter, spends the northern winter working at Ski Club Vail, Colorado. Both he and Mr Cowan (part-time) will be members of the Mount Hutt race department this season.

At its recent annual meeting in Auckland the N.Z.S.A. also announced the appointment of a full-time executive officer, Liz Mark.

Liz Mark, who has spent the last 7Fi years working for the information service in the United States embassy, in Wellington, is now based in Auckland.

Her job will be the overall co-ordination of N.Z.S.A. affairs. She will be responsible for administration within the N.Z.S.A., liaison with all ski industry bodies, sponsors, importers, ski areas and the travel trade. As well, she will help with the promotion of new concepts and ideas to stimulate interest in ski-ing.
