Contract signed

Austin Rover and Perkins Engines have signed a contract to jointly produce two advanced, high-speed, direct-injection diesel engines. The engines will be based upon Austin Rover’s 2-litre 0 Series petrol engine. One will be normally aspirated and the other turbocharged. Technologically these will be highly-advanced engines, the breakthrough being the ' se of direct injection on a .igh-speed engine. Direct injection, where the fuel is injected directly into the combustion chambers, promises a significant improvement in the already good fuel economy of car diesel engines, which are at present all based upon in-direct-injection systems in which the fuel is first ignited in a pre-chamber. Austin Rover plans to offer diesel versions of its cars using the new engines in 1985.
