Space offer declined

The Christchurch Polytechnic will not take up an offer of space at the Christchurch Teachers’ College site at Ham, as it has now received the go-ahead for its long-term building plans. Late last year, the Minister of Education, Mr Wellington, asked the council to consider transferring some teaching departments from the central city Madras Street site to the Teachers’ College site at Ham. The newly elected chairman of the council, Mr P. W. L. Mills, said that there

were some advantages in the Polytechnic’s using the relatively , new buildings at the college, but these were outweighed by the longterm disadvantages. There were transport problems for part-time students attending the Polytechnic, because of. an increasing number of students who studied in more than one teaching department. The availability of new computer facilities at the Polytechnic site was another factor. . After a meeting with Mr

Wellington recently, agreement had been reached-on an amended building programme. New buildings planned for the polytechnic included a new meat-training centre, for which working drawings have already been prepared. Catering facilities would need to be improved and an extension had been planned for the engineering block. In the longer term, a new permanent teaching block would replace temporary classrooms.
