Two wins for Cassidy

By

J. J. BOYLE

Jim Cassidy was very much in the judge’s eye right from the start when he moved in on Ashburton yesterday, in a bid to widen his lead on the jockey’s table. Rug Bug, his first mount at the meeting, drifted right to the outside rail as she mounted her run in the straight, and only failed by a nose to overhaul the winner, Speechless. About half an hour later, Cassidy rode Auk Princess to win the Lyndhurst Handicap and, later, he won the principal flat race on that filly’s stablemate, Weinmeister. Thirds with Ashwell and Gay’s Pal were the closest Cassidy got to a win later in the day, and the northern rider never got a sight in the final contest, on Lan-/ caster, which came in last. But the flying trip south for those two wins could have done much to clinch another premiership for Cassidy. He will return to Canterbury with hopes of improving his score for the Timaru Racing Club’s meeting on Friday, July 8.
