Hamel top in table tennis

Michael Hamel lost his Canterbury open table tennis singles title last weekend, but he remains the outstanding player in the A grade club competition this winter.

Hamel, with 21 wins, has a 100 per cent record. Ironically, Hamel beat the player who defeated him in the singles final on Saturday, Maurice Burrowes, 2119, 21-12, when Hamel’s Linwood team met the competition leader, Avonside I, which includes Burrowes, in the sixth round. Simeon Cairns has won eight of his nine matches, for an 88.89 per cent win-

ning record. Michael and Maurice Burrowes have percentages of 85.71 and 83.33, having played in seven and eight rounds respectively. Mike Prisk has won 16 of his 21 matches for 76.19 per cent; Jan Morris and Dennis Kalin have both wbn nine of their 12 matches for 75 per cent, while John Richards has the same percentage after picking up 18 wins from 24 games. The young Grant McCarroll has won 11 of his 15 matches for 73.33 per cent; and the veteran, John Armstrong, has won 17 of his 24 matches for 70.83 per cent.
