Research ship’s survey finishing

Two ships having surveys are berthed at Lyttelton’s No. 7 wharf, but one is expected to set sail tomorrow having spent a month in port.

While the Chathams trader Holmdale is at the start of her survey, the vessel she is berthed beside, the oceanographic research ship Tangaroa, is now having the finishing touches to her maintenance work.

The 1012-ton Tangaroa, used by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, is expected to sail for Wellington tomorrow. She has been at port undergoing a survey since May 17. The Tangaroa’s first job after her survey will be to ferry some researchers into the Marlborough Sounds. The Wellington-based vessel is used for oceanographic, geological, and mineral research in the South Pacific Basin, although most of her work is done in New Zealand’s marine economic zone.

The Tangaroa, a former refrigerated carrier, has a crew of 21 and can take up to six scientists.

Her survey at Lyttelton is only the second time she has called at port, even though She has been in service for the D.S.I.R. since 1973.
