Dismissal upheld
The Christchurch City Council was justified in dismissing a rubbish collection labourer last month, a Government-appointed conciliator, Mr B. P. Gray, has ruled in a reserved decision.
The man was dismissed on May 20 for alleged misconduct involving a female worker. Other labourers employed by the council on rubbish rounds went on strike on May 23 and 24, in protest at the dismissal, but agreed to return to work when the council accepted a request from the Labourers’ Union that it agree to a grievance committee chairman (Mr Gray) having a final and binding decision.
