Kiwifruit embargoed
PA Tauranga The embargo on the export of kiwifruit is still in place. Fruit picked since the severe frost on June 3 is likely to remain in stores at least until after a meeting of the Kiwifruit Authority on Thursday. Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries officers were yesterday continuing to inspect frost-damaged fruit.
The chairman of the authority’s grade standards committee, Mr A. J. Berryman, said 50 per cent of the affected fruit was still in
doubt. He estimated that 1.5 million trays of fruit were on the vines when the frost hit, compared with 9.5 million trays already picked and packed. Of the 1.5 million trays, 25 per cent appeared to be undamaged, and 25 per cent was damaged beyond salvage. “Some individual growers have suffered very badly,” Mr Berryman said, “but in total industry losses, the percentage of the crop lost is relatively small.”
