Two open records set at ice skating champs

Two open records and 11 New Zealand records were broken at the national 111 m speed ice skating championships on a fast Glenburn ice arena in Auckland

The outstanding competitor was the youthful Jane Clifford from the Mainland club in Canterbury. She won the three intermediate women’s events in record times and made a clean sweep of the senior races as well.

In the senior championship, Miss Clifford removed the name of Sue Blair (Canterbury) from the record books over the three distances — 200 m, 500m'and 1000 m. Her record time of 59.0 s over 500 m was recorded in a heat. In the senior 1000 m, Miss Clifford also set an open record, bettering the record held by an Australian, Gail Saundercock.

The other open record was set by another Mainland skater, Mark Atkinson. The country’s top skater for many years, Atkinson broke the 50s barrier over 500 m. His new time is 49.55.

Atkinson won three of the four races, but was pipped on the line by the tall Auckland skater, Matthew Biggs, over 1500 m. Atkinson eased just before the finish and lost in the last stride, although both skaters clocked the same time. Tony Smith (Mainland) fell in the 500 m, but finished second

to Atkinson over 1000 m and 3000 m.
