Amarant brilliant in Cup

NZPA Brisbane The Cup specialist, Amarant, will tackle the Melbourne Cup in November following his brilliant win in the $lOO,OOO Brisbane Cup (3200 m at Eagle Farm yesterday. Amarant, a “second thoughts runner,” blitzed the strong staying field. The top weight, Bound To Honour, was second by three and a half lengths, with a length to Lady Capulet. In a sensational race, two runners — Wellington Road and Smokey Babylon — crashed before the home turn and the Sydney jockey Neville Voigt, was left lying motionless on the track. However, both Voigt and Bruce Compton escaped serious injury. Amarant’s win was his first start since he scored a narrow victory in the Adelaide Cup (3200 m at Morphettville in May. Amarant, which finished third in last year’s Brisbane Cup and started equal favourite with the Tommy Smith trained Forward Charge at 11-to-2 this year, has had a history of feet problems. Amarant became only the third horse in 20 years to win the Brisbane-Adelaide Cups double.. The last was the Tommy Woodcock-trained Reckless in 1976 and the Bart Cummings’ stayer, Fulman, ten years earlier. The result, with New Zealand betting and favouritsm was:— (T.A.B. codes: AUST, RC) BRISBANE CUP, $100,000; 3200 m 2-3 AMARANT 3 52.5 P. Cook 1 1-1 BOUND TO HONOUR 1 54 B.
