Shamrock back on top in soccer

Shamrock returned to the top of the Hertz Soccer League with a crushing 6-0 win over Halswell United at Riccarton Domain yester-

day. It was the second defeat, by that margin during the' week-end for the bottomplaced Halswell. On Saturday it went down heavily to Rangers. Shamrock now edges Rangers out of the top spot by virtue of having conceded a goal less than Rangers, with both teams having a goal difference of 12. The clash between these two at Rangers Park on Saturday should be an intriguing confrontation, especially as Shamrock has now gone 21 league matches without defeat. Shamrock scored four times before half-time, through Mike Howard, Steve Fletcher, with a penalty, Joe Mullins and Wayne Burt. Howard added his second in the seventy-eighth minute and two minutes later Mike Cantin scored the sixth, leaving Halswell well and truly stuck at the bottom of the table. Burndale United moved into second place in the premier division with a 2-0 win over Western yesterday. Technical could manage only a 1-1 draw with New Brighton. In the other match, Rangiora crushed High School Old Boys, 5-0. Gordon Fraser scored twice, with John Fisher, Willie Carr and Tony Lucas picking up one each.

Wellington beat Auckland 4-2 in a representative soccer match at the Basin Reserve in Wellington yesterday, all the goals coming in a 12-minute spell toward the end of the game. Wellington 4 (B. Polyanszky 2, B. O’Neill, B. Harris), Auckland 2 (J. Price, T. Heptinstall own goal). Half-time 0-0.
