Easy win to Coe

NZPA-Reuter Birmingham, England Sebastian Coe opened his international season with a comfortable mile victory in an athletics match between Britain and the Soviet Union in Birmingham yesterday, but could do little to prevent his team slumping to defeat. Coe's performance was the highlight of a day made difficult by blustery conditions. He touched the throttle entering the final bend

and eased 15 metres clear

of the Soviet Union’s European silver medallist Nikolai Kirov to win in four minutes 3.37 seconds. It was his first mile since breaking the world record for the event 22 months ago, but the winning time was 16 seconds outside that world mark. The Soviet Union beat Britain by 239 points to 189 in the men’s event and by 153¥z points to 146 1 /z in the women’s match.
