Mythical Notes wins at Ellerslie
Special correspondent Auckland
Mythical Notes showed his stamina and recuperative powers as well when he won the Panmure Hurdles at Ellerslie yesterday. A South Island visitor to the Great Northern meeting, trained by Corrie Kerkvliet and lan Saunders at Riccarton, Mythical Notes was one of two horses who failed to complete the course in the big hurdles race last Saturday, having come down at the last jump. Mythical Notes was guilty of an earlier, serious blunder in the Great Northern but this time he made no such mistakes. He was running the pacemaker, Lucky Seven, close on the home turn then stayed on the better by two and a half lengths.
Mythical Notes is bound now for the Manawatu winter meeting, with the Awapuni Hurdles his assignment, and will probably make the journey south from Ellerslie on Wednesday.
A six-year-old gelding, Mythical Notes was secured on lease as a yearling by Kerkvliet, who exercised, an option to buy the horse when he was a late three-year-old, for $5OOO. An Australian once had a half share in the horse but dropped out of the ownership early in the piece. Mythical Notes came north with the reputation of being a very fair staying jumper and it was disappointing when he failed to show his best last Saturday. With luck he will get further expenses on his way home.
