Lord Hymac wins Wanganui Steeples

Special correspondent Wanganui

The durable South island jumper, Lord Hymac, almost crippled in a road accident three years ago, recorded the seventeenth win of his career when he led throughout the Wanganui Steeplechase at the Wanganui Jockey Club’s meeting yesterday. Lord Hymac suffered severe injuries in the accident when his ownertrainer, Graeme Jackson, was taking the horse and Taitan from Awapuni to Hastings.

“He couldn’t walk for seven days,” Jackson said yesterday. His recovery was set back further when he went sore soon after returning to work. It was discovered that he had a broken splint bone, probably a result of the accident but not revealed earlier. The two incidents meant he missed almost two years of racing when he was at the height of his career. However, he has come back strongly in the past 12 months and yesterday’s win was his third successive jumping success this year.

He won a hurdle race at Riccarton on May 18, followed up with the June Hurdles on the first day of the Wanganui meeting on Saturday and the steeples yesterday.

His record over fences is very imposing. Eight hurdles races have produced five wins and three seconds while three starts over the bigger fences have netted two wins and a second.

Jackson travelled up last Thursday with Lord Hymac and Politician and will stay in the north for the Manawatu meeting. He plans to start Lord Hymac in the Manawatu Steeples but is uncertain about future plans. Ridden by his regular rider, Paul Dooney, Lord Hymac pulled himself to the front soon after the start yesterday and was always travelling kindly. The field was closely bunched over the last circuit but, Lord Hymac jumped to a clear lead over the last fence and came ahead to win by two lengths. Foaming Henri battled away strongly for second, after being close up all the way, while Nicklebe came home in third place, five lengths back. The warm favourite, Grey Culate, was four lengths back, fourth. Ridden off the pace by Graeme Lord, he jumped bis way up to the leaders down the back straight and looked a big threat but tired over the final 600 m.

The only casualty was Mr Sandy, which was pulled up soon after completing the first circuit. He fractured his pelvis and had to be put down.
