Shipping Corp, fined

PA Auckland The Shipping Corporation has been fined $l5OO in the District Court at Auckland and ordered to pay clean-up costs for an oil spill into the Waitemata Harbour from one of its vessels. The company pleaded guilty to a charge that on November 2 it was the owner of the Tiare Moana from which oil escaped into New Zealand waters. The company also faced a charge that on March 4 it

was the owner of the Coastal Trader from which oil escaped into New Zealand waters. This case was adjourned without plea to June 21. For the harbour master, Mr D. A. Nolan told the Court that two oil slicks, one two metres by 25 metres and the other three metres by three metres, was discovered while the Tiare Moana was berthed at Captain Cook Wharf on November 2. Counsel for the Shipping

Corporation, Mr W. M. J. Marsh, said the oil escaped when crew from the ship had pumped salt water into a ballast, tank. Judge Hobbs said the spillage was not a major one and that structural damage to the ship might have played a part in the leak. He fined the corporation $l5OO and ordered it to pay $1066 dispersal costs, $5O solicitors’ fees and $2O court costs.
