Newmarket wins second Birthday Handicap
Special correspondent Dunedin Newmarket, the lone ride during the day for Raymond Bruce, won the Birthday Handicap for the second time at Wingatui yesterday.
Newmarket, trained at Washdyke by Richard White, who races him with his father, Jack, had not been successful since he won the Tally Ho Handicap at the Otago Hunt meeting 12 months ago, and had won the Birthday Handicap five days earlier. He has been ridden in five of his seven wins by Bruce, who completed his apprenticeship with the Washdyke trainer,
Pat Corboy, last January. Newmarket raced handy, disputed the lead with Regalo and Scotch Dream at the 800 m and came on strongly to win by a length. Auditory ran on well for second after trailing handy to the pace, while Seafarer battled on for third, his race on the first day appearing to have taken the edge off him.
Seafarer’s half-brother by Blue Vermillion, For Hire, was successful in the next race.
Pat Corby, the Washdyke trainer, won with each of his three runners yesterday. The success of Soaring
High in the Moyles Supermarket Handicap had additional satisfaction as the gelding is owned by Pat’s wife, Colleen.
Corboy also won the Otago Steeplechase with Sweeney Todd and the Otago Hurdles with Final Surge.
Soaring High carried top weight of 57kg to an easy win. He was three wide but handy and forged to the front at the 350 m. Prinz Eugen ran on for second in a gap of two and a quarter lengths. Indigod slipped and fell 50m short of the line when beaten.
