Bend trouble for riders
More than just a high-class, mainly South Island field created problems for contestants in the Healing-Radio Avon national indoor BMX championships at Wigram at the week-end. The first bend caused considerable difficulties for all competitors and there were some strange and unexpected results as a consequence. For example, in the prestigious open class, the national outdoor runner-up and former champion, Colin May (Kaiapoi), failed to reach the final. And the 1982 South Island champion, Darren Eckhold (Dunedin), fared even worse, last in each of his motos. The complete unpredictability in that class was further underlined when Bishopdale’s South Island champion, Shane Gibson, was first, the CanterS champion, Darren Wil(Homby), finishing in fourth place after a crash put him and Perry Hunt (Wellington) out of the running. Abbreviations used in the results are:—Bishopdale (Bhp.), North Avon (Nth A.), Rangiora (Rga), Hornby (Hby), Kaiapoi (Kai.), Dunedin (Dn), Nelson (Nel.), North Otago (Nth 0.), Invercargill (Inv.), Port Chalmers (Pt C.), Hastings (Hast.), Greymouth (Grey.), Ashburton (Ash.), and Blenheim (Bien.).
