Out in Front picked

Special correspondent Wellington The Stratford mare, Out in Front, was impressive in winning the Cuddle Stakes at Trentham last month and would not have to improve much to win the Suzuki Handicap at the Wanganui Jockey Club’s meeting tomorrow. Now worth $15,000, tomorrow’s running will be the fifth. Three of the early races have been won by northern stables, which will be strongly represented again. Out in Front, which is trained by Dick Bothwell, has won her last two races, at Stratford and last time at Trentham. She has drawn out a little in this field, but she gets back in the running and makes ground well. Her two most recent wins have been over 1600 m but the way she makes ground suggests that 2000 m will not be a problem. Merman won the race last year and promises to lead a strong northern bid. He failed around Rotorua last time but before ran second at Avondale. Our Charlie was pretty impressive in winning at Hawera last time and won before at Ellerslie. The colt was third the time before in the Avondale Championship Stakes. The field is headed with 57kg by Athamas, a good winner on the course. Athamas is not long back and he showed his readiness by getting second in the DB Galaxy behind Prince Majestic. Appendix has come through the grades quickly. After battling away, the four-year-old has gone on to win races at Foxton (the cup) and at Rotorua (the City of Rotorua Handicap) just last week. He pays for that. Tomorrow’s weight will be 56.5 kg. Tredici has the same weight. He has won two of his three races this campaign, at Awapuni and then at Masterton last week. His run there can only have improved him. Bridge Player showed a quick return to form winning first up on his home course of Woodville. He won the Owens last year. Flag Lieutenant is a visitor from Washdyke with solid form. He was • third last time at Riccarton and won two before that, at Riccarton and Nelson. Janet’s Boy comes south with a big reputation. Fourths at Te Rapa and Rotorua will help his cause. Solitaire runs some of her best races on this course and given heavy ground, she will be a major threat. She showed dash in two runs, at Awapuni and Foxton and is improving all the time. Desert Sabre is a tough customer which can never be underrated, while Little Vic was the beaten favourite in this race last year. Sprints at Avondale and Ellerslie last month will have fitted him well for the test. Purdah Gold won the Wairarapa Breeders’ Stakes.

She then han a Dau patch but looked good in getting second money at Foxton last time. Tallboy showed all the determination possible to win the sprint at Masterton last week. More ground may not bother him. Jester Purpose is a handy winter performer. He is not long back in this campaign and should be close to showing some worth-while form.
