Record entry
A record 59 entries have been received for the University of Canterbury’s annual Queen’s Birthday week-end volleyball tournament at the university’s gymnasium and Pioneer Stadium tomorrow and Sunday. The tournament provides for teams of various abilities. Twelve sides will contest the men’s A and B grades, 10 in both women’s divisions, and 15 in a mixed C grade for social players. Although some men’s sides—especially the national champion, Skellerup All Stars C.U.—have been affected because of the New Zealand tour of New Caledonia, a high standard is expected. All of the top southern and central league teams have entered. Skellerup, the reigning title-holder, will be challenged by three Wellington teams, Rongotai College 0.8., Eagles and Teachers’ College. All have lost one player to the New Zealand squad, compared with Skellerup’s three. The highlight of the women’s section is the expected clash between Skellerup All Star C.U. and Porirua, the national club and league champions, respectively.
