Soft sound for City Mall

When things get quiet in the City Mall, soft music will take up the silence. ■ The City Mall Association should have approval to install background music that would not be heard above the normal shopping bustle, the clean air and health committee said yesterday. Speakers mounted on building verandas will be adjusted so they do not exceed surrounding sound levels. There will be 35

speakers throughout the mall. Mr W. H. Stevens, centre manager of the City Mall Association, told the council in a letter that the music “will not be heard during a normal day, only at quiet times when the need to create an awareness becomes important.” Cr Geoff Stone wondered whether subliminal advertising would be mixed in with the music. That was not intended, councillors were assured.

“It provides a sort of warmth and friendliness not normally there,” said Mr R. A. Urlwin, of T.R.S. Communications systems, which will install the system. Music will come from Instant Music, Ltd. Cr. C. E. Manning, the committee chairman, said he did not like canned music, but it was a matter of personal taste. Cr Noala Massey said the Brighton Mall had background music, and it was a pleasant idea.
