Man jailed 6 1/2 years for armed robbery
PA Auckland One of three men, who robbed staff at the Birkenhead Licensing Trust of $45,000, was yesterday sentenced to 6*/a years jail. James Henry Wilson, aged 24, an unemployed forestry contractor, pleaded guilty to armed robbery when he appeared for sentence in the High Court at Auckland. Mr Justice Casey sentenced Wilson to 5% years imprisonment for the robbery and a further year for three charges of burglary
and unlawfully taking motor-vehicles. A lower court hearing was told how Wilson jumped from bush and hit a tavern employee in the face with a sawn-off shotgun, forced staff to lie face down on the floor, and ordered the manager to open a safe. His Honour said that Wilson had a long record for dishonesty and cunning. The robbery was well-planned and accompanied by violence and threats, in which Wilson played a leading role.
