Grocery prices forced up

PA Wellington Devaluation of the New Zealand dollar has forced the price of some groceries up. Tea, coffee, and other imported goods which have landed since devaluation have increased in price. The rises do not need sanction from the Trade and Industry Department because under the Price Freeze Regulations an increase in import prices may be passed to the consumer. The department had no detailed knowledge of how much imported items had risen since devaluation, said the director of the Commerce Division, Mr D. J. Gasson. The executive director of the New Zealand Wholesale Grocery Distributors’ Federation, Mr Michael Dawson, said shoppers would probably notice the price increases within the next two weeks. Some items might have already gone up, he said.

Items most affected by the devaluation were tinned tropical fruits and tinned fish from Asia and Canada.
