Learning to speak Maori

“Korero Mai,” beginning on One at 6.10 p.m. today, is a new six-part television series aimed at encouraging the learning of the Maori language. The 15-minute programmes will also look at customs and culture in an effort to give a greater understanding not only of the language but of the Maori way of life. A variety of methods will be used in the presentation of the material — comedy sketches, role-plays, short dramas, question-and-answer, and vignettes showing phrases in use in everyday situations. The producer, Brian Morehu McDonald, says that

his aim is “to take the language out of the classroom and make it a fun thing. Maori is very much a living language.” Mr McDonald points out that “Korero Mai” is the first language programme to be attempted by Television New Zealand. “With no precedents to follow we faced a lot of challenges in making language learning exciting, entertaining and interesting, and not something that will bore everyone to tears. We have gone for a bouncy format with lots of comedy, role-playing and simple animation.” He hopes it will appeal to all age groups.
