Illegal repairs

PA Wellington Surveys during the year suggest that one in three people dabbles in illegal electrical work round the home, according to the Electrical Registration Board yesterday. Survey results showed that most home electricians breached the Electrical Registration Act, 1979, with appliance repairs. About 5 per cent had installed, repaired, or replaced wiring round the house. ; _ ' About 20 per cent of

appliance repairs were later checked with a registered electrician. Electricians had checked about 60 per cent of illegal wiring. Consultants hired to make the surveys had said that any extensive campaign to publicise existing laws would be a waste of time and money, the board said. The act is under review, backed by the Minister of Energy, Mr Birch. He told the Institute of Electricians’ conference in March that there might be a case, for changes. ‘
